Tom Scarda of The Franchise Academy sat down recently with our brand’s CEO and founder to discuss the brand’s journey from a small business into a nationally recognized consumer service franchise brand. It’s an entertaining story of true entrepreneurial drive and success.

The Two Maids & A Mop story is an American success tale comprised of multiple challenges that truly tested our founder’s resolve to keep fighting. It took Ron two years to make a profit and nearly three years to even earn a paycheck. Eventually, the Two Maids & A Mop story started to take a more profitable direction after the implementation of our now-famous Pay for Performance compensation plan. Ron remembers the first time he used this phrase to a potential customer.

“I can still recall that first call with a customer when I discussed our compensation plan. You could feel the energy level through the phone when the potential customer heard me discuss how customer feedback determines employee wages. It was at that moment where I could see the rest of my life unfolding in a much different light. Business skyrocketed immediately after the launch of the unique compensation plan and hasn’t really stopped since that fateful day”

Two Maids& A Mop Published in Forbes Magazine

The CEO & Founder of Two Maids & A Mop, Ron Holt, just published a great article inside Forbes Magazine on his thoughts regarding failure as a necessary step towards ultimate success.

My success as an entrepreneur has always defied logic. After all, there’s no way a small-town boy from rural Georgia should have been able to build a $25 million residential cleaning brand on a shoestring budget. Seriously, my grand opening day resulted in just $130 in revenue. I burned through almost all of my operating capital in the first two years. And probably more importantly than anything else, I had never once actually cleaned a home prior to starting the business. I was set up to fail but didn’t. What was my secret? How did it happen? I’ve thought about those questions often over the years and believe that I finally have the real answer. My success, believe it or not, is a direct result of failure.

Ron Holt, CEO & Founder of Two Maids & A Mop

Our brand’s story dates back more than 16 years ago inside a 250 square foot office space. Those early days were filled with optimism and hope, but we also experienced several failures as well. Each of the failures could have derailed our larger goal of building the largest, fastest growing, most innovative residential cleaning company in the country. The article inside Forbes challenges faced by several well-known business leaders, and also gives you a behind the scenes depiction of the some of more difficult times during our early formative years. The best news of all is that failure should be embraced if you’re always staying true to the overall mission of delivering on your brand’s vision and future.

Meet Elizabeth Lamar: Superstar Franchisee in Huntsville, AL

Liz worked for about 10 years as a manager for a major restaurant brand, working about 80 hours a week! She came to a point in her career where her quality of life was not poor due to the extreme stress and heavy workload inside the restaurant. She was later introduced to Two Maids & A Mop by a family member. At the time the company was just starting out and so she was hired as a corporate store manager.

Liz says that she took a chance with Two Maids & A Mop but the CEO’s enthusiasm for the future was so contagious that she wanted to give it a shot. As a corporate employee she helped open and manage quite a few stores, but after she met her now husband she decided she needed to settle down and ended up running a corporate location in Huntsville, Alabama.

After Two Maids & A Mop started franchising, Liz watched all the corporate stores one by one convert into franchise locations, until her office was the last one left. That’s when she took an even bigger leap of faith and bought the location with the assistance of a capital partner. In this interview, Liz shares how she is able to have the most profitable location in the Two Maids system and what she watches to keep her profitability up.
