Success Magazine Recognizes Two Maids & A Mop

Cleaning homes can be a dirty business. We clean everything from dirty floors to nasty toilets. But after all of those germs and dust particles are removed, a decent amount of money is left behind for the owner of a cleaning business.

Success Magazine recently profiled five entrepreneurs that tackled the dirtiest possible jobs and built successful businesses around the dirty tasks. Our CEO & Founder – Ron Holt – started out like so many other hungry entrepreneurs. He met directly with the first clients, sold them on his services and even cleaned their homes in many cases. Nothing was too dirty for him and we’re so glad that he stuck it out during those early days.

Our franchisees today are not asked to clean dirty homes, but we also won’t deter them if they ever want to pick up a broom if their business needs them in that capacity. Knowing your business at the most basic level is an essential element of building a profitable business.

CNBC Profiles The Two Maids & A Mop Story

The Two Maids & A Mop rags to riches story was recently chronicled by CNBC. The network interviewed our CEO & Founder to talk about his early days prior to starting the business and then goes on to detail the company’s new direction in franchising.

Working at the lab from 1997 to 2003, not only did Holt dream of running his own business, he also set his sights on the field he’d go into: home cleaning.

That industry had three key features that Holt believed would lead to success. First, it had the prospect of recurring revenue — a stable inflow of cash from happy customers. Second, it was a field that didn’t embrace technology, creating opportunity outside the tech-laden start-up field. Finally, how many entrepreneurs can genuinely be excited about scrubbing grout and taking out the trash? I really wanted to be in an industry that no one else wanted to be in,” he said. “Silicon Valley isn’t really chasing us because at the end of the day you got to clean dirty toilets.”

Still, Holt had plenty of competition. Large cleaning service franchises include Merry Maids, Molly Maid and MaidPro. Small mom-and-pop operations fought for customers on the local level.

In order to seed his new business, Holt put away $150,000 over seven years. He spent his days working at the lab, but would moonlight flipping burgers, cleaning for friends and installing “for sale” signs for real estate agents to drum up extra cash.

Holt also shrunk his expenses, subsisting on fish sticks and rice every night. The upside was that he had no real social life, so he saved money that way, too.

“I was in my mid-20s,” he said. “Eating fish sticks and rice wasn’t very cool.”

Once Holt scraped up enough money, he bought a small one-man cleaning service in Pensacola, Florida, on April 1, 2003. That was Two Maids & A Mop’s first location.

We love our brand’s story and are so excited that the world is now discovering the unique evolution from our mom & pop heritage into today’s version of a nationally recognized brand.

For Two Maids & A Mop, our moment occurred several years ago when we switched from a corporate growth strategy to franchise growth. It was a big move at the time and one we thought long and hard about. But truthfully, it should have been a much easier decision because our life has never been the same since the switch. Today, we work with our franchise partners to build a great business and our motivations are all on the same page. Both of us want to build a successful business and our relationship runs in perfect harmony as a result.”

Two Maids & A Mop Awards First College Scholarship

The success generated by our fast growth has created so many opportunities for our franchisees, franchise network employees and home office employees. A little over one year ago, we made a strategic decision to use our success in other ways beyond just earning profits. We wanted to give back to our communities by empowering the families of our franchise network employees. The first ever Two Maids College Scholarship was then born and a full year of applications from hundreds of people were accepted shortly after the inception of the program.

The 500+ employees working inside our franchise network have been anxiously awaiting to hear results from our initial round of applications. And just yesterday, we had the pleasure of awarding our first-ever scholarship to Megan Sandoval, the daughter of a long-time employee in Huntsville, AL.

Megan was shocked to hear the news and almost every emotion poured out once she learned of the scholarship. Local news stations heard of our story and were on-site to capture the moment when Megan received the big news. Check it out by clicking here: Two Maids Scholarship.

CEO of Two Maids & A Mop Profiled in Leading Newspaper

Ron Holt was recently interviewed by AL.com; a leading newspaper magazine representing markets throughout the state of Alabama. The interview chronicled Ron’s journey from a small startup into today’s fast-growth towards a nationally recognized brand.

“There are another 250 markets we can enter in the U.S.,” Holt said. “We’re getting close to being sold out in the southeast, but it’s wide open in the northeast and out west.” The residential cleaning service franchise already has 46 locations, which includes the corporate location in Birmingham. “We are the fastest growing residential cleaning service in the country,” he said. “When we had one store, we had the same vision and people thought we were crazy. But we believed in it then, and we believe in it now.” Those plans present a big growth curve, but Holt said he feels the company is equipped internally to make the leap. Using its on-demand scheduling, Two Maids & A Mop sees itself as a “disruptor” business, like Uber.

The Two Maids & A Mop story has been recognized by more than 50 leading publications; from CNN Money, Fox News, Forbes, Success, Yahoo News, Better Homes & Garden, Entrepreneur and Inc. Magazine. To read the entire AL.com interview, please click the following link:  Two Maids CEO Interview.

Two Maids & A Mop Featured in Franchise Business Review Magazine

Franchise Business Review, a leading magazine dedicated to the franchise industry, recently published an article detailing questions for a franchise candidate to consider when evaluating different franchise opportunities. We were honored to be included within the article and excited to share our thoughts. In our opinion, one of the least considered attributes of a franchise opportunity is its ability to compete locally. We’ve always considered our business model to be our best competitive advantage since it’s not only proven, but different. There are so many cookie cutter options in the franchise industry and Two Maids & A Mop stands out clearly as a result. From our industry-changing Pay for Performance Plan to our focus on digital marketing, we’ve never stood still for too long because innovation and disruption has always allowed us to compete against bigger brands with substantially bigger resources. This willingness to disrupt not only makes us different, it also makes us the best choice for the consumer….and ultimately the local franchisee as well.

Competitive Advantage: “Look for a franchise that offers a business model that is so remarkable that local competitors can’t compete,” says Ron Holt, CEO and Founder of Two Maids and A Mop. “In addition to identifying a proven business model that offers a unique selling proposition, look for an internal infrastructure that provides top-notch support and a profitable business plan that will enable you to achieve a healthy bottom line. Finding a franchise opportunity that meets each of these three characteristics will help ensure long-term success.” Two Maids and A Mop offers both an owner-operator and a semi-absentee owner investment model. Its owner-operators work from their respective offices, while its semi-absentee franchise owners work from their homes.
